40 UN VOLUNTEERS JOIN MINUGUA
Following a long selection process throughout Guatemala, 40 new national UN Volunteers began their assignment with the United Nations Verification Mission in Guatemala (MINUGUA) regional offices and headquarters. The mission now has a total of 60 UN Volunteers working in the Transitional Programme dedicated to the enhancement of national capacities including the training of indigenous people.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS FOR VOLUNTEERS IN IRELAND
Volunteering Ireland, the largest volunteering centre in Ireland, today launches the first Irish handbook on recruiting volunteers, Opportunity knocks: Opening doors for volunteers with additional support needs, with Senator Feargal Quinn in Dublin. Opportunity knocks breaks stereotypes about who can volunteer.

Liliane Tyan, présidente de Help Lebanon, a commencé sa carrière de volontaire en 1975 au moment où la guerre a éclaté au Liban. « Je préparais des sandwiches pour les enfants, a-t-elle affirmé ; la guerre venait de les rendre orphelins. Devant tant de souffrance, j’ai dû réagir ! » D’autres volontaires ont suivi le sillon ouvert par Liliane et ont porté secours aux enfants coincés sous les abris.

PHILIPPINES SEARCH FOR BEST VOLUNTEER ESSAY
The Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency and the United Nations Volunteers programme in the Philippines recently launched a writing contest to promote volunteerism in the country. Organizers are seeking for "submissions of fresh, honest, insightful and inspiring personal essays on volunteer experiences."

SCOTTISH ORGANIZATIONS ATTEND FIRST VOLUNTEER FAIR
Local and national volunteer-involving organizations promoted their services at "The Gathering", a fair by the volunteer sector, in the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow on 23-24 February. The Gathering, the first event of its kind in Scotland, included conferences by major local volunteer organizations, a market place for organizations and exhibitions seminars and workshops.

1200 YOUNG VOLUNTEERS READY TO SERVE IN BOLIVIA
More than 1,200 university graduates will volunteer to help reduce poverty, empower women and support local volunteer-involving organizations in Bolivia under the "Youth with People Participation" initiative of the United Nations Volunteer (UNV) programme.

AFRICAN WILDLIFE BECKONS ADVENTUROUS VOLUNTEERS
Earthwatch, the international environmental organization, is calling for volunteers to take part in its new "Namibian Black Rhino project" to help save this species from extinction. Dr. Stephane Helary, wildlife veterinarian, will lead a team of volunteers to investigate the diet and food preferences of rhinos in specific seasons.

VOLUNTEERMATCH TEAMS WITH GOOGLE TO PROMOTE VOLUNTEERISM
Google recently selected VolunteerMatch as a "Google Grant" recipient, providing VolunteerMatch with free advertising throughout the Internet's primary search engine. Ads for VolunteerMatch appear intermittently whenever a Google search is generated for keywords like "volunteer" and "community service." These ads link directly to VolunteerMatch's extensive network of volunteer opportunities.

ONEWORLD AND UN VOLUNTEERS TO BOLSTER SOUTHERN VOICES

ONLINE VOLUNTEERING SERVICE HAS A NEW HOME
The Online Volunteering (OV) service has been relaunched at a new web address, www.onlinevolunteering.org. The OV service, managed by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, resumes its mission of connecting online volunteers with civil society organizations, UN agencies and academic institutions serving people and communities in developing countries.

INFORMAL VOLUNTEERING RISING IN NORTH LANARKSHIRE, SCOTLAND
Statistics from a newly published national document have revealed that an increased number of people are giving time to volunteering in the towns of North Lanarkshire and across Scotland.
