CHARITYFOCUS.ORG: HELPING OTHERS HELP OTHERS
CharityFocus is a nonprofit organization that empowers nonprofits with web-based technological solutions. Its volunteers build websites, provide technical assistance, and engage in a variety of projects designed to benefit the organizations dedicated to public service. Started in April 1999 with four volunteers and “an idea of building free web solutions for nonprofits”, it now comprises of over 4,600 volunteers in a dozen countries that have served more than a thousand such organizations.
A few other interesting projects of CharityFocus are: HelpOthers.org (helps people to spread “random acts of smiles”), PledgePage.org (a simple, free way for people to create their personal fundraising sites), cShops.org (an Internet storefront that allows grassroots communities to sell their goods online), Enlightening Messages (free e-banners with positive messages) and ProPoor.org (portal for South Asian NGOs). Notable is the fact that all these projects are fully run by volunteers, without any overhead. In the founders’ words, “CharityFocus is an experiment in the joy of giving -- an experiment that is working.”
